Sunshine Enterprises
Sunshine Enterprises aims to help entrepreneurs with high potential in areas that have limited resources grow their businesses, and to transform their communities. This is made possible by the 12-week Community Business Academy, and the continuous Business Acceleration Service help, which includes microgrants, workshops and coaching.
Sunshine gives entrepreneurs financial support which can prove to be a significant obstacle to the creation or growth of a new business. The Coaches for Business Coaches of Sunshine consult together with entrepreneurs in a one-on-one setting to identify the kind of financing needed and develop an action strategy. Sunshine collaborates with a wide range of financiers, such as Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI), Byline Bank, CIBC Bank as well as Wintrust Community Bank.
The model of Rising Tide Capital is the inspiration behind this non-profit's operation. President Obama recognized Rising Tide Capital for their Community Business Academy which has been instrumental in bringing life back to neighborhoods and change lives. 94% of the graduates went on to establish new businesses or create jobs.
Sunshine Enterprises also provides support for local entrepreneurs through UChicago Local. The partnership between UChicago Local and UChicago Medicine enables realigning procurement departments so as to use the services of local suppliers who can offer competitive bids, helping to grow small businesses in the Chicago economy and assisting with social initiatives within the University. UChicago Local also links local entrepreneurs served through Sunshine Enterprises with other programming such as Chicago Innovation Exchange or Institute for Justice Clinic on Entrepreneurship located at Law School - further expanding opportunities.
Incubatoredu
INCubatoredu gives students an opportunity to experience entrepreneurship by creating their own business. Students are guided by a mentor or coach during each class to assist them in their projects, such as removable foot pads that can be cleaned and social applications.
When teams of students progress through the course students learn to refine and strengthen their ideas for startups by conducting customer and idea exploration, market research, prototyping building and pitching. This process fosters cooperation, collaboration, and problem-solving capabilities, as well as teaching students how to quickly adapt to change.
Each team competes to win funding at the INCubatoredu National Pitch, which is held annually. The opportunity offers teams valuable networking experiences with investors and insightful advice from business leaders and is a renowned event for its shark tank-style pitch sessions.
Students and teachers have the opportunity to create friendships that last a lifetime with INCubatoredu that will impact their careers, colleges and communities outside of classrooms. Listen to INCubatoredu's graduates describe their surprising and anticipated life-changing effects!
